HAZMAT
AND SPILL TRAINING
This is a course of classroom and hands-on instruction for hazardous materials workers or handlers. The course is based on the requirements of the superfund amendments reauthorization act of 1986 (SARA). This regulation includes a provision that all workers and supervisors on a hazardous waste site must be trained in general to recognize the hazards of the site, and how to do the work safely. The course addresses the basic training needs of general site workers engaged in hazardous substance removal or other activities, which expose or potentially expose workers to hazardous substances or health hazards. This course is designed to satisfy the off-site requirements of 29 CFR 1910.120 for initial training of such individuals. Regulations also specify field training specific to the sites and tasks the workers will be assigned to. Objectives of this course include the ability to:

- Recognize and assess site safety and health hazards
- Implement work practices to minimize risks
- Identify properties and toxic effects of hazardous materials and select exposure guidelines
- Identify components of a medical surveillance program
- Recognize symptoms and signs which might indicate overexposure to hazards
- Perform CPR and First-aid
- Select, use and care for SCBA respirators
- Select, use and care for special chemical protective clothing
- Plan for safe site operations and site emergencies
