Emergency Lighting

Exit and emergency lights are often required in multi-unit residential, commercial and industrial buildings. According to NFPA 101 Life Safety Code and NFPA 70, emergency lighting should provide required illumination automatically in the event of any interruption of normal lighting. Also, exits should be marked by an approved sign readily visible from any direction of exit access. OSHA Section 1910.36 required that “in every building or structure equipped with artificial illumination, adequate and reliable illumination shall be provided for all exit facilities…and where provided, shall be continuously in proper operating condition.”

Even though emergency lighting is a key component in any facility’s safety equipment package, it is often neglected. Battery powered emergency lighting units require periodic maintenance and testing to assure their proper performance.

City Wide carries a full line of complete exit and emergency light fixtures, in addition to supplies, bulbs, batteries, and phosphorescent replacement glass. We also provide full-service maintenance on emergency and exit lighting. We ensure all bulbs, backup batteries, and backup bulbs are properly functioning. W also make sure the lights illuminate when the circuit breaker for the exit/emergency light is tripped. Without this feature, the backup mode of your safety lighting is useless and may be in violation of local and insurance fire safety requirements.

Suggested Service for Emergency and Exit Lighting

Monthly – we recommend you press the test button for 30 seconds to ensure proper functioning of your emergency and exit lighting.

Annually – City Wide will check that the fixture properly illuminates and will perform a discharge and voltage test. We will compare this voltage drop against known values for your specific equipment to ensure proper functioning of all emergency lighting. At this time, any bulbs, batteries, lenses, exit glass and non-functioning signs will be repaired or replaced.

Combining emergency lighting service with annual fire extinguisher maintenance and fire protection services allows you to take advantage of the added service benefits without additional trip-related charges – providing the most cost-effective means to fire safety compliance.
